Socialization

Hi, it's me again Isabelle The Pug! Today we are going to talk about the all important socialization.

Me, personally being a pug, I have no problems in this area. I love adults, kids, dogs, cats, squirrels, birds etc... and going new places, but for some of my fellow canines it isn't quite so easy. Socialization is important because you want a pet who is comfortable in a variety of situations with all kinds of people so lets get started!

Ideally you should start my lessons as early as possible, but it's never too late, just remember to be patient.

Take me with you to new places and let me meet new people as often as possible. Variety is the key! Let me meet seniors, kids, other dogs etc. Take me to the pet store and for walks in places with lots of people.

If I seem fearful, be patient, but don't coddle me too much, or I may think there really is something to be afraid of. Reassure me and give me a treat when I act like you want me too and don't forget praise, praise, praise!

Don't tolerate any nonsense from me either. Growling, snapping etc... are not to be tolerated. Remove me from the situation, correct me (again not too harshly) and try again later. I'll get used to new things the more I am exposed to them.

Enrolling me in a puppy class or adult obedience class is a great idea! New place, new people, new dogs - what fun! I may even learn some new tricks to entertain you!

Remember, be patient as not all dogs are as sociable as us pugs and it may take some time, but you will be rewarded with a pet you can trust to behave where ever they go, regardless of who ever is around.

Until Next Time,

Ciao!

For Crying Out Loud Pugs

I just happened to read the news crawler on this page and came across this article; For crying out loud pugs what's wrong with you. If you're too darn fat eat less and walk more your people will enjoy it. Does this world really need fat drugs for pets for pete's sake. What's next Poochie pooch liposuction?!

Summer Safety!

Hi All! Summer's here and I look forward to longer days and picnics, but there are some things you need to know to keep us safe and happy all summer long.
  1. NEVER, EVER keep us in a car when you aren't there. It can easily reach 150 degrees in the car and snub-nosed breeds like myself, bulldogs and boxers will succumb to the heat stroke quicker even than our longer muzzled cousins. We could easily die.
  2. Always provide fresh, clean water for us; I particularly like a bowl of ice or ice in my water dish on a hot summer day.
  3. Snub nosed breed (hey that's me again) should be walked early in the morning or in the evening. Those noses that make us so cute also make us prone to overheat.
  4. If I do overheat, soak me in cold water, wrap me in a cool wet towel and take me to the vet immediately.
  5. Make sure I have some shade if I'm outside, but honestly I'd rather be in the air conditioned house cuddling with you.
  6. Please watch me if there's water around. I may like to swim, but I'm not really good at it (some even say us pugs swim like rocks).
  7. Don't forgot my flea, tick & heart worm preventatives. Now you can get them all together in products like Advantix! Not only do fleas and ticks make me uncomfortable and infest your house, but a bad infestation could make me anemic or even require a blood transfusion to save my life.
  8. Remember while heart worm is treatable for dogs (unpleasant for me and expensive for you) it is fatal and untreatable for cats. I love my kitties and want them to be healthy too!

Follow these tips and we will have a fun summer together! Lets have a BBQ and share a hot dog (and maybe a potato chip or two?)!

Until next time!

These are a few photos of me and mom and dad (mom's in the green, dad's in the blue) graduating from Intermediate training with my friends. I can't begin to tell you how much fun I have socializing with my friends and their two legged pets.

Till next time,
